About Stephen R Powell

Cinematographer. Filmmaker. Storyteller.

A filmmaker, photojournalist, and avid explorer, Stephen is driven by an insatiable curiosity to explore and tell the stories beneath the surface. He infuses his passion for adventure into his work around humanitarian issues, bringing new perspectives that help change the public conservation. His first documentary (producer/director/ writer) was a 26-minute pilot called A Round for the House (2002). His first major success came in 2006 when he was lead editor and story editor on the award winning film The Forgotten City.

Since that time he has earned screen credits as a director, story editor, producer, field producer, director of photography, and editor on over 100 national television shows and projects. These have included programs for every one of the major networks, NBC, CBS, ABC, National Geographic, United Nations Films, Paramount, CNN, The History Channel, PBS, AP, Reuters, Discovery Networks, FOX News Channel, Travel Channel, Food Network and more. He has worked as a field producer for the 2010 Olympic Games. He has also served as a judge for the EMMY Awards, the International Documentary Association, and has also worked teaching media studies at The Park School of Buffalo.

In addition to his documentary and television experience Stephen has directed and produced hundreds of promotional videos for corporate and NGO clients.

Most recently (February, 2020), Stephen worked as Director of Photography in Congo for the United Nations on a documentary tracking the Ebola Outbreak there entitled Fighting for Survivors which was released to film festivals in August, 2020.

Currently, Stephen is directing a documentary that follows Zamir Gotta, a close friend of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain as he travels America entitled
98 Degrees West -Zamir Discovers Bourdains America.

Steve seems happiest when it’s remote and conditions are challenging. But adventure isn’t the only driving element for the Upstate New York native – he also focuses much of his work and attention on social justice issues. Stephen has covered events and stories all over the world.

In addition to his work in film and television Stephen has is the author of the 1996 book “Rushing the Growler: A History of Brewing in Buffalo.”
